Where to Watch NRL Magic Round 2026 & State of Origin in Sydney

3min | May 5th, 2026

NRL Magic Round is back. State of Origin is coming. And there’s only one right way to experience both…

Cold beer in hand, surrounded by your crew, inside a Sydney pub that goes feral for footy.

Every year, two NRL events stop Australia in its tracks. The first is NRL Magic Round — where all 16 teams descend on Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium for a packed weekend of back-to-back football from 15–17 May 2026. The second is State of Origin — the Blues vs. the Maroons, the greatest rivalry in Australian sport, played out across three Wednesday nights that have a habit of breaking hearts, igniting beer gardens, and making absolute legends out of the pub you chose to watch it in.

But here’s the thing: you don’t need to be in Brisbane to feel the Magic Round electricity. And you definitely don’t need a seat at Accor Stadium, the MCG or Suncorp to feel what it means when your state needs a try in the final five. That’s where we come in.

Whether you’re a die-hard Maroons fan living in enemy territory, a Blues loyalist who takes every Origin personally, or someone who just loves great footy and a packed pub on a big night, we’ve rounded up the best Sydney spots to book your table for Magic Round weekend and all three Origin games. Don’t wait — these nights book out fast.

BrewDog South Eveleigh

Set inside the soaring sandstone vaults of the historic Locomotive Workshop at South Eveleigh, BrewDog is one of the most architecturally striking venues in Sydney — and when the footy is on, that industrial-chic space transforms into something genuinely electric. For Magic Round weekend (15–17 May), the venue is rolling out wall-to-wall NRL coverage across its massive screens, with 40 taps of BrewDog craft beer, legendary wings, loaded pizzas and a communal beer garden and interior big enough to fit hundreds of fans. This is the kind of pub where you can watch three games back to back on a Saturday afternoon and the energy just keeps building with every kickoff.

When State of Origin arrives, BrewDog South Eveleigh is officially confirmed for all three games — Game I on 27 May, Game II on 17 June, and the potential decider on 8 July — broadcast live and loud across two huge in-venue projectors. Pre-game coverage kicks off from approximately 7pm, with the 8:05pm whistle guaranteed to be felt from every corner of the venue. And here’s a bonus for Blues fans heading to Game I at Accor Stadium: BrewDog South Eveleigh is just five minutes from Redfern Station, making it the perfect pre-game base before you head into the ground — or the obvious choice if you’re watching the game live in-venue instead.

Cargo Bar, Darling Harbour

Cargo Bar has been one of Sydney’s most beloved waterfront venues for two decades, and its reputation for big nights extends well beyond the dance floor — it’s a serious NRL destination. Perched right on the King Street Wharf promenade with Darling Harbour glittering beyond, Cargo is showing every NRL match across its screens all season long, including every game of Magic Round weekend (15–17 May). The combination of cocktails, cold beers, harbourside views and back-to-back Saturday footy makes this one of the city’s great Magic Round setups — get in early and claim the best possie before the crowds arrive.

On State of Origin nights, the Cargo Bar atmosphere reaches another level entirely. The venue transforms into a passionate, roaring crowd of Blues and Maroons faithful — the kind of energy where every tackle is felt by the whole room and every try sparks chaos from bar to balcony. Whether you’re catching Game I on 27 May (when Accor Stadium just up the road is already packed), following the series to Game II on 17 June, or sweating through the potential series decider on 8 July, Cargo’s combination of cocktails, beats and big-screen footy makes it one of the most vibrant spots in Sydney to be on Origin night.

Henley’s Kitchen & Bar

Henley’s Bar & Kitchen occupies a prime two-level spot right on King Street Wharf, with sweeping views across the harbour to the west and a casual, welcoming atmosphere that makes it the perfect venue for the full arc of a footy night — arrive hungry, order something from the pub-style menu of parmies, burgers, pizzas and bar snacks, settle into a comfortable seat, and let the big-screen action do the rest. Henley’s screens AFL and NRL weekly throughout the season, and Magic Round weekend is exactly the kind of occasion the venue is built for — multiple games rolling across the screens while the harbour light fades and the crowd builds with every passing hour.

State of Origin at Henley’s is a genuine city-centre experience — the kind of waterfront pub setting that makes a Wednesday night in May, June or July feel like a proper occasion. With big games, cold beers and city vibes as the house mantra, the team at Henley’s knows how to set the scene for Origin. Whether it’s the opener on 27 May with Blues fans flying on home turf, the MCG clash on 17 June reverberating through Sydney pub screens, or the teeth-clenching decider on 8 July, Henley’s two levels and harbourside energy gives you the perfect backdrop for whatever the series delivers. Book your table and claim your seat before they’re gone.

The Erko Hotel

Part of the fabric of Erskineville since 1882, The Erko is that rare thing: a pub that actually feels like your local even if you’ve never been before. Every NRL game this season is on live and loud across The Erko’s screens — including all of Magic Round weekend — and their NRL Tipping Competition with FANZO (with an in-venue prize pool and a free schooner just for signing up) means the entire rugby league season has extra edge here. Their kitchen focuses on produce-driven elevated pub classics — the kind of food that actually makes you want to stay for the second game.

For State of Origin, The Erko is Inner West institution-level. With a welcoming beer garden, a pool table for the halftime break, and a front bar that vibrates with collective noise when the big moments happen, Game I on 27 May, Game II on 17 June and the potential decider on 8 July are all nights worth booking into The Erko well in advance. It’s dog-friendly too, so bring the whole crew — fur babies included.

Bungalow8

Bungalow8 brings tropical vibes, a massive big screen and some of the best NRL energy in the CBD to King Street Wharf’s waterfront strip. Their tagline for the season says it all: NRL Live. Big Screen. Bigger Energy. Every game, every round, all season long — including the full run of Magic Round weekend, when the action flows from afternoon into night and Bungalow8’s relaxed-yet-electric atmosphere makes it one of the most enjoyable places in Sydney to catch back-to-back fixtures. Pull up a chair, grab a cocktail from the bar or something from the kitchen, and let the footy run all weekend.

On Origin nights, Bungalow8 becomes a different beast entirely. From Game I through to the series conclusion on 8 July, the bar draws a passionate crowd that brings genuine footy atmosphere to every set, pass and try. The combination of tropical décor, Bungalow Nights entertainment DNA and a crowd that’s genuinely invested in the result creates the kind of evening that’s hard to replicate at home.

The Golden Sheaf

A heritage-listed institution in the Eastern Suburbs, The Golden Sheaf has welcomed generations of locals and visitors through its doors — and its Sports Bar makes it one of the best-equipped NRL venues in Sydney. Inside the ground-floor Garden Lounge, you’ll find 8 dedicated sports screens, pool tables for the gaps between games, a vintage jukebox, walls adorned in sports memorabilia, and an onsite TAB. The Sheaf proudly calls itself home to the Sydney Roosters — which makes Magic Round weekend, when the Roosters square off against the Cowboys on Saturday 16 May at 5:30pm, a particularly charged occasion here in the Eastern Suburbs.

State of Origin at The Golden Sheaf is hard to beat. All three games live and loud from the Sports Bar through to the beer garden, plus enjoy $8 Toohey’s New schooners siren to siren on game days. The Sheaf fills up fast on Origin nights — it’s one of the most sought-after watching spots on Sydney’s north-eastern arc, drawing city-slickers, Eastern Suburbs locals and visiting fans alike. Whether you’re a Roosters tragic who also bleeds Blue, or a Queenslander bravely flying Maroon in the Harbour City, booking a table at The Golden Sheaf for all three Origin games is one of the better decisions you’ll make this winter.
