Where to Watch NRL Magic Round 2026 & State of Origin in Brisbane

3min | May 5th, 2026

NRL Magic Round is back in Brisbane. State of Origin is coming home to Suncorp.

And if there’s one city that knows how to turn rugby league into a full-blown pub pilgrimage, it’s this one.

Every year, two NRL moments take over the calendar NRL —  Magic Round and State of Origin. But here’s the thing about Brisbane during Magic Round and Origin season: the atmosphere doesn’t stop at the stadium gates. It spills into Caxton Street, across the river, through West End, into Fortitude Valley, out to the suburbs and straight into the pubs and bars that know exactly how to handle a big footy night.

Whether you’re in town for Magic Round, chasing a pre-game pint before Suncorp, watching every fixture without a stadium ticket, or booking the crew in for all three Origin games, these Brisbane pubs and bars are built for big screens, cold beers, pub feeds and the kind of crowd that feels every tackle.

The Lord Alfred Hotel, Caxton Street

If Magic Round had a spiritual front door, The Lord Alfred would be standing very close to it with a cold beer ready.

Sitting on Caxton Street, just 500 metres from Suncorp Stadium, The Lord Alfred is one of the most obvious Brisbane pubs to book for Magic Round weekend and State of Origin season. It has the location, it has the game-day history, and most importantly, it has a giant 7 x 2 metre screen that makes every try, replay and “how was that not six again?” moment feel properly huge.

For Magic Round, The Lord Alfred is going all in with a full car park party from Friday 15 May to Sunday 17 May. Every game will be live and loud on the giant screen, with pop-up bars, live music and giveaways adding to the weekend. If you’ve got tickets to Suncorp, it’s the perfect pre-game or post-game base. If you don’t, it’s the next best thing — and honestly, with the pub atmosphere in full swing, it might come dangerously close.

When State of Origin rolls around, The Lord Alfred becomes even more essential. Game III at Suncorp on Wednesday 8 July could be the decider, and Caxton Street will be absolutely humming. Arrive early, get fed, claim your spot, and either walk to the stadium or settle in for the full live-and-loud experience right in the middle of Brisbane’s rugby league heartland.

The Boundary Hotel, West End

The Boundary Hotel is back in all its West End glory — and for footy fans, that is very good news.

The Public Bar is the go-to for the footy, with screens showing sport all year round, ice-cold beers on tap, pub feeds and the sort of easy atmosphere that makes “one game” turn into three. For Magic Round, The Boundary is a brilliant option if you want to stay close to the action without being right on top of the stadium crowd. West End gives you that sweet spot: big Brisbane energy, plenty happening around you, and a pub that knows how to keep the screens, drinks and crowd moving.

For State of Origin, The Boundary is a strong pick for anyone who wants to feel the Maroon noise without battling Caxton Street. All three games are made for this pub, but Game III at Suncorp is the one to book early. If Queensland has the chance to seal the series at home, West End will not be quiet about it.

Port Office Hotel, Brisbane City

This is the spot for footy fans who want a little more food and wine with their rugby league. Port Office Hotel’s Public Bar keeps things casual, with gastro-pub fare, craft brews and live sport in the heart of the city, while the Dining Room and Balcony Bar make Port Office especially useful if your group includes both die-hard NRL fans and people who are mostly there for the good lunch. No judgement. Every crew has one.

Port Office is also leaning right into Magic Round before the first NRL game even kicks off, with a Magic Round Lunch with Legends on Thursday 14 May from 12pm to 4pm. Expect a three-course meal, drinks and appearances from rugby league greats including Paul “Fatty” Vautin, James Graham, Benny Elias and Kevin Walters. That is not a warm-up. That is a full send.

For State of Origin, Port Office works beautifully as a city base — easy to reach, easy to book, and exactly the kind of pub where you can start with dinner and end with the whole room yelling at the screen.

Regatta Hotel, Toowong

Sitting on the Brisbane River in Toowong, The Regatta is a classic Queensland pub with scale, character and plenty of ways to make a footy day your own. The Main Bar is the obvious place to post up for the NRL, with a strong beer list and a proper pub feel, while The Courtyard gives you that open-air Brisbane energy between games. If your Magic Round plan involves food, drinks, river breezes and multiple screens rather than fighting your way through the stadium precinct, Regatta is one of the strongest westside picks.

For Magic Round weekend, The Regatta has Magic Round live and loud over the whole 4 days, which makes it easy to treat the whole weekend as one rolling session. Sunday is especially tempting, with Warriors v Broncos at 4pm giving Brisbane fans a very good reason to settle in early and stay through Panthers v Dragons.

For State of Origin, The Regatta brings heritage pub atmosphere with serious Queensland pride. It’s a natural choice for groups who want something iconic, riverside and still very much ready to roar when the Maroons cross the line.

Finn McCool’s Brisbane, Fortitude Valley

There are normal pub crowds, and then there are Irish pub crowds watching sport. Finn McCool’s Brisbane belongs firmly in the second camp. Right in the heart of Fortitude Valley, Finn McCool’s brings the kind of atmosphere that makes live sport feel bigger: big screens, hearty pub meals, cold pints, live music energy and a crowd that doesn’t need much encouragement to get involved.

For Magic Round, Finn McCool’s is a brilliant Valley base. You can come in for the footy and stay for the craic, whether that means a proper Irish feed, a pint of Guinness, a few rounds with mates, or a full Saturday that starts with Tigers v Sea Eagles and ends somewhere around the Eels v Storm final whistle.

For State of Origin, the live-and-loud setup makes plenty of sense. The pub shows NRL and State of Origin among its major live sport lineup, and the Valley location means the night has somewhere to go after full-time. If the Maroons win, excellent. If they don’t, well, there’s always another pint and a very loud debrief.

Crown Hotel, Lutwyche

Crown Hotel is the inner-north local that understands exactly what game day needs: a sleek sports bar, a beautiful beer garden, big screens, pub classics and snacks built for the second half.

Newly renovated and proudly serving locals for more than 140 years, Crown Hotel has re-emerged as one of Lutwyche’s best pubs for live sport. The sports bar is the hero for Magic Round, with every NRL game screened live and enough space to settle in with mates, order a feed and avoid the nightmare of missing a try because you picked the wrong moment to head to the bar.

For State of Origin, Crown brings local-pub comfort with proper sports-bar intensity. All three games are worth booking, but Game III at Suncorp will have the northside amped up. This is the kind of pub where you can wear the jersey, get the parmy, and let the Maroons stress do the rest.

Book your spot now →

The Kenmore, Kenmore

The Kenmore is one for the westside footy faithful — a modern local with a proper sports bar, TAB facilities and four massive screens in the back bar showing the biggest clashes.

For Magic Round, that screen setup matters. This is a weekend where one game rolls straight into the next, and The Kenmore makes it easy to settle in properly without needing to cross town. The back bar is the place to be if you want the action front and centre, while the broader pub gives groups enough flexibility for lunch, dinner, drinks or a more relaxed Sunday session.

For State of Origin, The Kenmore is a reliable local choice. Big screens, cold drinks, food that can carry the night, and a crowd that knows what a Queensland decider means. If Suncorp is too hectic but the couch feels like a waste, this is where westside fans should be booking.

The Oxley Hotel, Oxley

The Oxley Hotel — The Ox, if you’re on friendly terms — is a south-west Brisbane local that keeps things simple in the best possible way: NRL live and loud, cold drinks, a solid pub feed and a relaxed atmosphere that makes every weekend game feel easy.

For Magic Round, The Ox is a strong option for anyone who wants to avoid the city crush but still catch the full weekend properly. The pub shows NRL every weekend, rain, hail or shine, which makes it a dependable base for the Friday double-header, Saturday triple-header or Sunday’s Broncos fixture. Round up the crew, grab a table, and let the weekend do what Magic Round does best: slowly take over your entire schedule.

For State of Origin, The Oxley Hotel brings local energy without the commute. All three games will have their moments, but Game III at Suncorp is the one that could turn the whole pub into a chorus of Queensland noise. Book the table. Wear maroon. Prepare emotionally.

Book your spot now →

Hotel HQ, Underwood

Hotel HQ Underwood is the southside pick for fans who want a big sports-bar feel without heading into Brisbane City.

Recently renovated and built for live sport, Hotel HQ shows the NRL, NRLW, State of Origin and major internationals live and loud, which makes it one of the easiest choices for Magic Round and Origin across Logan and the southside. It’s the kind of pub where you can bring a big group, order a proper feed, and keep your eyes on the screen from kick-off to full-time.

For State of Origin, Hotel HQ is built for the occasion. Big game, big screen, big Queensland energy. If Game III becomes the decider at Suncorp, Underwood will still feel very much part of it. Gather the mates, get the table sorted, and pull out your Maroons jersey.
